98% Black silicon carbide vs. 99% black silicon carbide
Black silicon carbide is an artificial abrasive material. It can work fantastic for sandblasting, abrasive tools, anti-slip, and heat resistance fields. However, the quality and technical indexes are different because of the different production technologies. Basically, the 98% black silicon carbide and 99% black silicon carbide are both A-grade SiC.
But still, there are apparent features respectively:
- Chemical content.
98% Black silicon carbide gets SiC purity min. 98%, Free Carbon max.0.2%, and magnetic content max. 0.02%. 99% Black silicon carbide gets SiC purity min. 99%, Free Carbon max.0.15%, and magnetic content max. 0.01%.
2. Cleanness.
99% black silicon carbide is very for water and chemical treatment in production. While 98% purity SiC is produced by air flow milling or Raymond milling.
3. Application.
98% SiC grain is suitable for sandblasting, surface treatment, anti-slip wear materials, and some abrasive tools. While 99% SiC grain is more suitable for making abrasive tools, SiC ceramics, and paint additives.
4. Bulk density(LDP)
99% black carborundum grain is of higher bulk density. That is very important to input more abrasive grains in the mold of abrasive wheels. High bulk density is get from the reshaping milling process. Then the grain shape is of less sharp edges.
The following is a chart of the bulk density of the two types of black silicon carbide F grits:
F Grit Size | Bulk Density(LPD) (g/cm3) of 98% black silicon carbide | Bulk Density(LPD) (g/cm3) of 99% black silicon carbide |
F12 | 1.38-1.48 | 1.40-1.50 |
F14 | 1.40-1.50 | 1.42-1.55 |

F220 | 1.35-1.45 | 1.42-1.52 |
5. The price
The price of 98% black silicon carbide is 20% lower than 99% black silicon carbide. So it is of higher cost performance.
