The difference between black silicon carbide and black aluminum oxide
Black silicon carbide and black aluminum oxide abrasive grit are both hard materials. They are both good abrasive materials in the grinding and polishing industry. But there are differences in their chemical composition and physical properties and so on. Another name for black silicon carbide is black carborundum. And another name for black aluminum oxide is black corundum. They are both Synthetic black emery.
Firstly, the chemical composition. The chemical composition of black silicon carbide is SiC. It is an abrasive from melting Petroleum coke (or Anthracite) and natural quartz sand. The black SiC is classified into different levels based on the SiC content. The quality levels of black silicon carbide include first-level black silicon carbide, second-level black silicon carbide, third-level black silicon carbide, etc. The raw materials for smelting black aluminum oxide are bauxite and high alumina iron ore. The main chemical composition of black corundum is Al2O3. According to the different content of aluminum oxide, there are two grades including ordinary black aluminum oxide and high-quality black aluminum oxide.
Secondly, there are differences in hardness and grinding ability. The microhardness and Mohs scale hardness of black silicon carbide are higher than those of black aluminum oxide. Black silicon carbide has strong brittleness and slightly lower toughness. As a result, it gains high grinding efficiency when grinding hard materials such as ceramics and jade pieces. The prominent feature of black aluminum oxide is its strong toughness. it can increase its lifespan after being made into grinding wheels. However, the grinding efficiency and sharpness are not ideal.
Additionally, the appearance. The appearance of black silicon carbide particles presents a dazzling luster, with colors of black or gray brightness. The particles of black corundum have no luster, and the color is iron black or dark black.
Moreover, the application and usage. Black silicon carbide is used for sandblasting and manufacturing high-performance stone grinding wheels and sandpaper. The workpieces targeted are mostly made of materials such as stone and ceramics and are also suitable for some alloy products. The typical use of black corundum is to polish stainless steel devices with cloth wheels and glue dipped in sand.
Finally, production costs and prices are different. The price of black silicon carbide is usually 2-3 times that of black corundum, and the cost of use cannot be compared.
Users need to choose the appropriate black emery according to their application requirements.
