Polishing powder for glass oil film cleaner: silicon carbide or cerium oxide?

The front windshield and outer glass of a car usually require cleaner with abrasive particles to remove oil film. Rainstains, water stains, plant and animal oil stains, bird droppings and other stains are difficult to remove with ordinary cleaner. Grinding type glass oil film cleaner can remove the staines quickly and efficiently.  Functional abrasive particles is necessary for glass oil film remover to improve the removal efficiency. Silicon carbide powder and cerium oxide powder are commonly used materials.

The selection of silicon carbide and cerium oxide requires comprehensive consideration based on the application scenario, cost, and effectiveness. The main differences between silicon carbide powder and cerium oxide powder are as follows:

1. The Mohs hardness of silicon carbide powder (referring to green silicon carbide powder finer than 2500#) is 9.4-9.5, and the Vickers hardness is 3280-3400 kg/mm2. The Mohs hardness of cerium oxide powder is around 7.0, and the Vickers hardness is 1800-2000 kg/mm2. High hardness means high grinding efficiency and high stain removal rate. And low hardness means low damage to the glass.
2. The grinding principle of silicon carbide powder is physical removal, which requires high particle size uniformity of the powder. The grinding principle of cerium oxide powder is a combination of physical and chemical removal, therefore, the requirement for particle uniformity is not very strict.
3. Silicon carbide has better thermal and thermodynamic properties, good corrosion resistance, and is even insoluble in strong acidic and alkaline substances at high temperatures. Has better chemical inertness. Cerium oxide is soluble in substances such as concentrated H2SO4 and HNO3.
4. The hazards of silicon carbide powder mainly manifest in the harm of silicon to the lungs after inhalation. Cerium oxide is a toxic substance. The harm to the body is different between the two.

Therefore, suitable grinding powder can be selected for automotive glass maintenance according to different degrees of oil pollution and repair requirements.
