Refractory Silicon Carbide advantages

Refractory Silicon Carbide advantages

Refractory silicon carbide is a synthetic refractory material based on SiC substance (CAS:409-21-2). It is made from silica granules and carbon material in a huge resistance electric furnace at about 2800 degrees.  Refractory Silicon carbide chunks, nubbles, and powder always work as refractory lining, furnace castale, and mortar. Silicon carbide is a better refractory aggregate and castable than aluminum oxide-based refractories for its extraordinary advantages as follows:

1. High-Temperature Stability: Silicon carbide has excellent thermal stability and can withstand extreme temperatures, making it ideal for high-temperature applications. It has a melting point of around 2700°C and can maintain its mechanical strength even at elevated temperatures.

2. Excellent Hardness and Wear Resistance: Silicon carbide is one of the hardest materials, second only to diamond. It exhibits exceptional hardness and wear resistance, making it suitable for applications where materials need to withstand abrasive wear, erosion, and harsh environments.

3. Chemical Inertness: Silicon carbide has high chemical inertness. That means it is resistant to most chemicals, acids, bases, and corrosive environments. This makes it a preferred choice for applications in chemical processing, refractories, and corrosion-resistant structures.

4. Low Thermal Expansion: Silicon carbide has a relatively low coefficient of thermal expansion. Thus, it expands and contracts less with changes in high-temperature circumstances compared to other materials. This property helps in reducing thermal stress and potential cracking issues in applications exposed to rapid temperature variations.

5. Good Thermal Conductivity: Silicon carbide has high thermal conductivity. That allows efficient heat transfer in applications such as heat exchangers, kiln furniture, and high-temperature components. It helps in distributing heat evenly and reducing hotspots, leading to improved thermal management.

Those advantages make silicon carbide help to make SiC bricks, and ceramics with high Compressive Creep resistance, and abrasion resistance. The applications of refractory Carborundum include:

  1. ladle and furnace aggregate and castables.
  2. SiC-based refractory bricks.
  3. Silicon carbide mortar.
  4. Steel making deoxidizer.
  5. Kiln furniture such as rods, plates, etc.
  6. Thermal resistance ceramics.
  7. Ceramic nozzle and filter in metallurgy and foundry.
  8. Refractory and thermal coatings.
  9. Heat insulation fillers.
