Silicon carbide is an important raw material in modern industries. There are applications including advanced SiC ceramic, abrasive, non-slip, semiconductor, etc. Let’s see how it is developed.
Generally, Silicon carbide grit is always used for grinding on glass, marble, and granite for its awesome hardness. But in particular, silicon carbide works well for blasting on brass, copper alloy, aluminum alloy, titanium alloy, tungsten steel, and other metals.
Green silicon carbide powder is fine-grained silicon carbide powder, and its silicon carbide content can reach 99%. In order to define the fineness of the powder, countries divide the particle range of silicon carbide and assign specific grits. Green silicon carbide F600 grit belongs to the category of European standard FEPA, and green silicon carbide JIS600 grit belongs to the Japanese standard JIS category. The JIS labeling is more detailed for powders with particles ranging from 63 microns to 1 micron.
There are three types of silicon carbide powder with different production technology. They are Raymond roller milling, jet milling, and water overflow washing. The physical properties of the silicon carbide powders get different as well.
Silicon carbide grit was artificially synthesized at the end of the 19th century. It has achieved large-scale industrial production with several decades of development. Subsequently, silicon carbide grit has become more and more widely used as raw materials for the abrasives industry. Generally, green silicon carbide is used as the raw material for marble and glass abrasive products, and black silicon carbide is used as the raw material for ceramic, stone, cement, and other abrasive products.
