Black silicon carbide properties and applications

Black silicon carbide (Black carborundum) is an artificial abrasive media. The SiC content of A-grade black silicon carbide is up to 98%.  After chemically treated, black silicon carbide purity can reach 99%. Although the hardness is not as high as that of green silicon carbide, black silicon carbide is excellent for grinding such as ceramics, stone, and wear-resistant coatings. Black silicon carbide is also a kind of raw material for reaction sintered ceramics, ceramic filter membranes, etc. The remarkable performance characteristics of silicon carbide include:

High wear resistance
Good corrosion resistance at high temperature
Excellent high-temperature chemical stability
Superior refractoriness.

 

Here are the applications of black silicon carbide:

 

  1. Grinding and polishing: Black silicon carbide is suitable for grinding ceramic products, jade materials, soda lime glass, glass handicrafts, etc. It can also grind directly as sandblasting media on aluminum alloy semiconductor parts.
  2. Abrasive products: Black silicon carbide grit is suitable for coated abrasives. Black silicon carbide P sand and F sand are raw abrasive material for sandpaper, abrasive brushes, paint polishing wheels, glass wire drawing wheels, water-grinding sandpaper and other products.
  3. Ceramic filtration products: Black silicon carbide micron powder works well in industrial ceramic products such as silicon carbide ceramic membranes, diesel particle filter ceramics, and high-temperature resistant foam ceramics in the iron and steel casting industry.
  4. SiC Ceramic products: Black silicon carbide has strong wear resistance and can be used to produce reaction sintered silicon carbide ceramics, corrosion-resistant & wear-resistant ceramic water pumps, bulletproof armor, etc.
  5. Wear-resistant and anti-corrosion coatings: wear-resistant modified resins, fillers for high-temperature anti-corrosion coatings, wear-resistant pipeline inner walls, and repair of power plant desulfurization systems.
  6. Other wear-resistant products. such as skateboard wear-resistant stickers and other sporting goods.
  7. Refractory material: Silicon carbide is the raw material for the production of magnesia-carbon bricks and silicon carbide deoxidized products. 85-90% low-grade sand always works directly as a deoxidizer for steelmaking.
